Kevin Stammen crowned Season XII WPT World Champion

kevinstammenThe season XII WPT World Championship was won by Keven Stammen on Sunday, who after putting on a dominant final table performance took $1.35 million at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Stammen won the race against Byron Kaveman in a thrilling heads up match. Kaveman’s runner-up finish won him $727,860 and added another feather to his WPT resume as he tied the record for most cashes in a single season with six (a record he shares with Stammen).

Season XII’s WPT World Championship boasted a $5 million guarantee with a $15,400 buy-in — reduced from the WPT’s previous standard of $25,500. A total of 328 entries and reentries were recorded and the poker world’s who’s who were present to take their shot at the the $1.35 million first-prize payout and the prestige of winning the title.

The chip leader of Day 2 and Day 3 was Eric Afriat, however by the final table, Kevin Stammen had the lead. Stammen went on a tear on Day 4 building a big stack while busting many of his fellow pros along the way. Those who fell at Stammen’s hand included many of the toughest players, as he finished LoniHarwood off in 29th place, Jeff Madsen in 19th place, cashed Chris O’Rourke out in 14th place, and booted Bobby Oboodi out the door in 12th place.

The televised final table was truly a star-studded affair. Ryan D’Angelo continued his amazing run through the WPT this year, earning his fifth cash of Season XII and earning the second-largest score of his career. The self-proclaimed “Psycho Ninja” Curt Kohlberg brought his inimitable fashion sense and outspoken attitude to the final table. Abraham Korotki made his second final table of this seasonal series after winning the $2,700 Main Event just over a week ago.

This was another successful season for the WPT, as well as an apt finish to the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open.
