WSOP 2021: Abhinav Iyer’s Main Event Journey Ends In 60th Place For $113,800

Abhinav Iyer has once again made India proud with his performance at the World Series of Poker (WSOP). India swelled with pride as the country’s first solo WSOP bracelet winner moved to Day 6 of the WSOP 2021 Main Event, competing a felt as strong as 6,650 entries. Iyer, who had won his first WSOP gold bracelet in 2019, was chasing his second bracelet. He was the only Indian holding up India’s bracelet hope among the 96 survivors moving to Day 6.  Thanks to his great run on Day 5, he started Day 6 with a massive stack of 5.85 million in chips but unfortunately could not go all the way.

According to the latest update coming from the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Iyer’s Main Event journey ended at the 60th position for which he received a whopping $113,800. His dream run was dusted by Australia’s Sean Ragozzini during 28th level in a hand where Jack Oliver opened with 240k and was called by both Sean Ragozzini and Iyer. The flop opened to 5s 8h 3s where Ragozzini checked and Iyer shoved all-for 1,000,000.  Oliver folded and Ragozzini called. Iyer held 5d 4d against Qs 9s of Ragozzini. Although Iyer was ahead on the flop, the turn Qh gave his opponent the lead, and the river 9h improved his hand further and Iyer’s dream run ended in 60th place for $113,800.

Iyer’s 60th place is the best Indian finish at this year’s WSOP Main Event. With his deep finish in the event, he has become the third Indian best finisher at the WSOP Main Event after Nishant Sharma (34th for INR $230,475) and Kartik Ved (51st for $173,015). Aditya Agarwal (71st for $96,445) and Vivek Rughani (88th for $77,695) round out the top five finishes at the WSOP Main Event so far.

Iyer is one of the best Indian MTT players and has cashed four times at the 2021 WSOP, with his Main Event finish being his best score at the ongoing series. He started his campaign with a 229th place finish for $1,787  in the $800 No-Limit Hold’em 8 Handed Deepstack (Event #33) and followed up that with a 164th place finish for $1,762 in the $800 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack (Event #46) and a 12th place finish for $41,181 in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6 Handed Championship (Event #56).

While Iyer was the best Indian finisher at the WSOP Main Event 2021, there were several other Indians who cashed, including Kalyan Chakravarthy (367th for $30,000), Yudhishter Jaswal (567th for $21,600), Vidur Sethi (632nd for $20,000), and Shashank Jain (862nd for $15,000). While India’s chase for the Main Event bracelet is over, there are still several events remaining where Indians will be aiming for the shiny gold bracelet. We wish our talented players good luck and hope India gets the coveted bracelet at the ongoing series! Keep following OPN for the latest updates!
