Korea’s Lim Yohwan Wins APT Vietnam Championships Event; Three Indians Cash

The 2019 APT Vietnam Championships Event is in the books. Once again, the event played out at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh City found a champion in Korea’s Lim Yohwan aka ‘Boxer’, who collected a whopping VND 2,040,542,000 ($88,000) for winning his second Championships Event title.

Yohwan is one of the most active live tournament players from Korea. Playing for more than 5 years, the player has won several big scores. However, this grand win for the VND 2,040,542,000 ($88,000) was his best live score till date. Before this, his best live cash included $52,256, which he earned when he had won the first Championships Event in September 2018. With this win in this APT Championships Event, Yohwan has crossed his whopping $336,386 in live tournament earnings.

The VND 38,500,000 buy-in Championships Event drew a total of 248 entries across 2 starting flights. Top 25 players shared the VND 8,419,600,000 ($363,000) prize pool and the money line was reached on Day 3 that started with 34 runners. Among the 34 runners on Day 3, there were three Indians, namely Baadshah Gaming’s Madhav Gupta, Adda52 Team Pro Kunal Patni and Romit Advani.

While all 3 Indians posted scores, they ended their journey short of the final table. Baadshah Gaming’s Madhav Gupta finished best among them, taking 15th place for VND 123,009,000 (INR 3,76,833). Gupta had a spectacular run in the series as he had also made deep runs in two other APT Events, namely Head Hunter and High Rollers. The second best finishers in the event was Kunal Patni. Adda52 Team Pro – Patni, who had grabbed big headlines for finishing runner-up in the WPT Berlin Main Event last year, ended as the second best Indian finisher going out in 16th place for VND 102,508,000 (~INR 3,14,029). Romit Advani finished 18th, securing VND 102,508,000.

Some other notables to finish in the money in this highlight event were Day 2 chip leader Indian-origin Ajitpal Singh (10th for VND 177,133,000), Canada’s Linh Tran (11th for VND 147,611,000), Nguyen Chi Thinh (14th for VND 123,009,000), and Duy Tung Nguyen (23rd for VND 71,186,000).

It was Korean pro Eunho Kwon (2,510,000) who started the final table as the chip leader. Yohwan (715,000) was one of the shortest stacks. However, the latter played some top-notch poker and ended as the winner. The heads-up began with Slaven Popov holding a two-to-one lead against Yohwan. However, Yohwan picked up quickly getting even in stacks and later taking the chip lead. The chips continued to exchange till Yohwan’s pocket tens won a big double up against Popov’s pocket nines. The last hand of the tournament saw Popov shove all-in with Ad 3h against Yohwan’s Ah 6h. The latter hit the nut flush to eventually win his second APT Championships Event title.
