MPC23: Nikhil and Devang in the Hunt of Red Dragon; Dhaval and Akash Wins the Teams Event

nikhilSeveral Indian poker players have battled out for the Red Dragon trophy of the Macau Poker Cup over the years but, we are yet to get that trophy home. India was closest to the title in 2012 when Abhishek Goindi finished runner-up. In the on-going MPC23, Nikhil Maheswari and Devang Shah remains the only  Indian players in action at the end of Day 2 of the Red Dragon Main Event. Meanwhile, Dhaval Mudgal and Akash Malik won the HK$4,000 Teams Event outplaying 105 teams to win the lion’s share of HK$370,152 prize pool. This came as the first title for Team India in MPC23 out of 11 final table appearances.

Red Dragon Main Event Day 2

213 players returned on Day 2 of the Red Dragon Main Event at PokerStars LIVE, Macau with first objective of making it to the money list of Final 117. The field was slashed down to 48 players by the end of the day topped by China’s Kejian Mu who has a monstrous stack of 1,006,000. India’s Shashank Jain who started as chip lead on Day 2 couldn’t survive for the next day as his Ace-Queen fell against opponent’s Ace-Jack with another Jack falling on board. Amongst the other 4 Indians, only Nikhil Maheswari (615,000) and Devang Shah (185000) could make it to the Day 3 of the Main Event. Day 3 action will begin on Thursday and will be played down to the final table. Team PokerStars pro Kosei Ichinose is among the notables remaining in the hunt of the Red Dragon title.

Indian performances in Side Events

In the 2-day event, $5,000 NLH, 2 Indian players made cash finishes. Danish Shaikh placed 8th bagging HK$36,700 while Krishna Raaj Chandra Mohan won HK$11,600 finishing HK$11,600.

Team India bagged its first trophy of the MPC23 outing on Wednesday when Dhaval Mudgal and Akash Malik took down the Teams Event. The Indian duo battle out with 105 teams to win this trophy and the lion’s share of the HK$370,152 prize pool.
