Weekly Sports Round up – India clinched historic wins in Cricket and Badminton

India registered historic wins in Cricket and Badminton this weekend. Virat Kohli led Team India whitewashed Sri Lanka in the 5-match series ahead of the Australian tour. Adding to the celebration is double win by the Indian shuttlers in the China Open Super Series bagging both the women’s and men’s singles titles. Topping the football news is Kerala Blasters’ 1-0 win over Delhi Dynamos in Indian Super League.

Badminton

Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth won women’s and men’s titles of of the $700,000 China Open Super Series Premier making it a historic double for India this year. The Olympic bronze-medalist Saina beat Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-12, 22-20 in the final that lasted 42 minutes at the Haixia Olympic Sport Center. The 21-year-old, Srikanth played an aggressive game against the five-time world champion Lin Dan making it the first time when any Indian male shuttler has won a Super Series Premier event. Srikanth won the finals with 21-19 21-17 against the home favourite and two-time Olympic champion Lin.

Cricket

Indian thrashed Sri Lanka in the 5th match on Sunday, 16th November by 3 wickets making it clean sweep (5-0) in the ODI series. Virat Kohli’s 21st ODI century lead India to finish off the match in style with 6 balls remaining. Earlier Sri Lanka posted a total of 286 on the board with the help of 139 runs by the captain Angelo Mathews. Dhawal Kulkarni took 3 crucial wickets while R. Aswin and Akshar Patel bagged 2 wickets each. India started off on a weak note as the two openers fall in quick succession but it was A. Rayadu steering the team’s boat with the help of Captain Kohli. For his consistent performance in the series Kohli bagged himself Man of the Series title. This 5-0 win against T-20 World Champion Sri Lanka is a huge boost to Team India before leaving for Australia’s Tour.

Football

In Indian Super League, Sachin Tendulkar owned Kerala Blasters FC defeated the Delhi Dynamos at its home ground by 1-0. Kerala Blasters strengthened their position in the points table in 3rd position with this win and also bolstered their chances of reaching the Semi-finals of the first edition of this tournament. Delhi looking to crawl up the charts from their rock bottom position made 6 changes in the team after their previous loss to FC Goa but still couldn’t save the game. The game was going even till the 55th minute, when Penn Orji was brought in as part of an attacking change by Delhi. After five minutes, the Nigerian’s shot from the edge of the box was deflected into the net by Anwar Ali making the maiden goal of the match. The hosts made a few changes later to even out the goal but they failed to steer past the defense of Kerala Blasters.
