Poker Player Files: Grinders Inc by JD

So its 6am in the morning on Monday, I have been playing online for the past 12hrs ,stock market opens in another 3hrs which would be my day job.I have 3hrs to kill and I know if I sleep there is no way I get up when the market opens. So what do we do.Obviosly not the most +EV but I call up a friend to know if a game is running and head out.

Reach there by 630 and find a good game with a seat open and snap take the seat and take 2BI.(One BI is effectively 100BB so 2BI would be 200BB).And so the challenge starts. The game has been running all night and its deeper with people chasing losses or with those who have made a healthy gain.Poker is a zero sum game, negative sum when u add that the house takes a rake from pots.On top of that its predatory and then the all important ego factor comes in.The game went decent for me without many significant hand showdowns and in the end I book a 3BI profit and cash out. Head back home and now grind the stock market looking at my positions and by 1130am am dead tired and go off to sleep. Not the optimal sleeping time obviously.

I live along with other people and for the most part all of them have poker as a majority part of their interests.Waking up at 5pm and the first thing asked is do I want to head out to play.30 min later and after a rather unconventional time lunch am back again at the poker table. The game is decent with a bunch of regulars and some recreational guys there to have some fun.In my own personal option going out for a 10k luxury outing is equivalent to a 10k buyin game if he feels it was worth the experience.Poker players are an odd bunch. They want to play people who have the least knowledge about poker or are doing it for entertainment and when one this particular less savvy poker knowlege makes some objectionable play or gives them a suckout they are the first to jump out of their seats and say how bad he is .Duhh.Wasn’t that the reason you were playing him thinking you have an edge.Recretional players are as good as customers for the regulars and instead of berating them they should rather make their experience worthwhile cause if new recreational players stop coming the poker economy would outright collapse.Sadly this simple concept bounces off most regulars and pros too.

So jumping back to my current session. The game is going decent until a recreational guy losses a big pot in the bigger table and moves one stake down to our table. No one on a poker table is a LIFE fish, unless obviosly if you are playing with money you can’t affort to lose, but maybe then ur an outright donkey. The game suddenly moves to a diffent gear as he joins. His raises are much much more bigger than what the table was accustomed to.Everyone pretty much knows its gonna be a swingy game .I had already grinded my buyin to 3BI when he sat down.I have the table covered and he buys in for 2BI.The next 8hrs ahead of us were gonna be the most fun 8hrs i had on a poker table for some time .I know the guy personally and he is a very nice person by nature. But that day he was gonna show us the what GOD run in poker terminolgy came from.He was splasing chips around opening pots for 20bb’s ,3 betting every hand that was opened calling and shoves with 27 off suit just for the hell of it.Oh did i say he wasn’nt losing any. There were two particualr hands which were pretty much the highlight of the session ,my pesonally losing AA to him thrice all in pre flop don’t even come close.I can cry and show by beats or rather show u some fun hands.

I made a hand replay out of it for making it easier to understand.

The best part about the hand was when on flop the second stack shoved he did not snap call like most poker playing people do.Also he did not slowroll. He just started laughing and mind you not the way we laugh it was a comical ravan laugh that would make any stage artist envy him.In one sec without even seeing the cards the whole table knew what he had.

The second hand of highlight in the session was one with my roommate Saby and him.

I might have made many mistakes in stack counts but i just wanted to use a replayer than writing the hand down .

So finally he calls time and leaves I find myself from up 2 BI to down 4BI.But to say the least the entertainment was worth it . 😀 He got up with 12BI from his original 2 and if u were to look at the table at the end of the massacre there as one huge pile of chips at one corner of the table and everywhere else on the table were some few chips scattered.

Head back home to do the market work schedule and sleep until like dinner.Ya surprise surprise no social life 😀 .Its now tuesday evening and out of the past 48hrs 30 have been playing poker. So what should we do next.Obviosly head back for some more.Recovery is one of the most idiotic concept if someone applies it in poker. You play in a game until you think its profitable ,most people including me obvisoly at some point or another have endulged in recovery mode, and then find ourself even stuck more.

Game has just stated and our friend from yesterday also joins the table. The game went good from the get go and I amassed a decent pile of chips in front of myself.People are quitting this table to join other new tables because its running wild .From 9 handed only 5 remain who want to continue playing this table.

Then this hand went down

For the sake of lowering variance i ran it thrice after flop with the Iranian guy if the other guy doesn’t win the first run.If he hits the first time we both lose since it will only be run once then.

Since most of you would already have said i might have put it in a dead spot let me just give my personal reasoning in the hand.

I raise get 2 callers.Iranian has a tight range and he calls pre.Our friend completes in the big blind.Flop is so montonous that Aces seem so far ahead. Now i get pot lead into which am assuming from past history is a lead with just a pair.I call and to my surprise the iranian behind me reraises. The thing of interest more was the snap call from our friend. It now comes to me ,I have 3 options CALL,FOLD ,SHOVE.I take my time over her ego go over the hand .The iranian is a tight reg and I have undrepped my hand on flop too much.On top of that the snap call on flop of our friend seemed more of a draw than anything major.I can safely assume he would have raised pre with JJ,77,66.So sets is never in his range at all.Going back to the iranian guy can he have JJ,77,66 YES.But would would he raise set on this dry a board,he might now himself be overvaluing top pair .A little over 30 secs in tank and i shove.Get reluctand called by Iranian and then by our friend.Get shown a top pair top kicker (TPTK) and a gut shot staight draw.First time my ACES hold.

And ya just for fun the second and third time both my opponent spikes a 1-1 outer J-Jack. I never run it ever, but for these 30 days I thought if a pot was more than 5BI in size I will run it to reduce variance. So much for reducing variance and the thought process crap lol.

After this hand the table broke .Although we took another beauty after moving to a new table .

Money for side pot went all in on turn when i check shoved to his value bet .Oh river :P.

Still after all this I ended my session up 10BI which was a good outing for one 10hr session.
